Connecting content creators and their fans
Introduction
Moonshot is a social media app that connects content creators and their fans, and helps to monetise interest. On the one hand, the app provides creators a range of tools to publish content, moderate their audiences and manage monetisation. On the other, it helps fans to discover and reward great content in a variety of ways.

Monetise and connect
There are millions of content creators all over the world, especially now with video and image content being in demand more than ever. A lot of these content creators, especially in countries that are not the US, don’t have a way to monetise their most loyal fans. Enter Moonshot. Moonshot gives content creators all over the world the ability to invoke a connection with their fans and monetise different levels of content.
Colour and typography
Since the app is both a social and a business app, I tried to strike a balance between fun and seriousness. I judged purple to be the embodiment of that balance because it can symbolise everything from creativity to the promise of wealth.
A clean sans-serif typeface was going to be essential to the app. It came down to a couple of options with Inter winning out. Its legibility, important in an app that involves finances, was a big plus as well as its broad language support.
Design system and UI library
I created a design system of styles, components and guidelines which was then used to create an extensive library of UI elements to create consistency in the app’s appearance.
Meaningful experiences
With the app supporting two user types (creator and fans), it was important to map out the unique experiences of both sets of users and how they feed into each other. To make this clear, I created a flowchart with all the features and the capabilities of the users.
Different strokes for different folks
Essentially, creators can match their posts to different plans. Free posts can be seen by everyone. Subscriber posts are only accessible to subscribers. And fans so inclined are able to make a one-time payment for exclusive posts.
Creators also have a range of tools to create and manage subscription plans.
Facilitating connection
Creators can chat directly with fans and send DMs to all subscribers at the touch of a button. That gives them personal means of expressing gratitude and offering new and exclusive stuff to people more likely to engage.
The fact that creators can also see how much they earn from each fan can serve as a basis for building better relationships, more mutually satisfying relationships with said fans.
Manage finances
Since monetisation is the main draw of this app, creators have to be able to track and manage their finances with complete clarity and transparency.
Managing experience
To manage the overall quality of their experience on Moonshot, the settings is extensive. It covers everything from account management to privacy settings and support.
My final take
Designing a social app as extensive as this was a revelation. Beyond design, it was interesting and tasking to be involved in ideating features and requirements. Even though the product management bits were technically outside my role, having to take them on has helped to consolidate my overall knowledge of product development.
